

ENGLISH FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Il corso "English for IT" fa riferimento all'inglese applicato all'informatica, con particolare attenzione al lessico del hardware, del software e della programmazione.
L'inglese è la lingua franca nel campo dell'informatica e di internet e la terminologia specialistica di molte lingue è dominata o molto influenzata da parole inglesi o da suoi adattamenti e interferenze.
Propedeutica al corso è una conoscenza della lingua inglese di livello B1 (medio-progredito) o l'esame di Lingua Inglese.

Unit 1: Computer applications - Using computers at work-Word fields: computers in education, banks, sports, airports, medicine, factories, entertainment - Present simple active and passive.
Unit 2: Describing a computer system - Basic terminology: hardware, software, peripherals, input/output devices, central processing unit - Compound adjectives.
Unit 3: Inside the system - Describing a computer system - Acronyms and abbreviations: CPU, ALU, RAM, ROM, MHz, GHz, bit, SIMM, DIMM.
Unit 4: Bits and bytes - Prefixes: deci-; hexadeci-; kilo-; mega-; giga-; mini-; micro-; bi-; tri-; mono-; multi-.
Unit 5: Buying a computer - Vocabulary tree: terminology:
Unit 6: Different input and devices-voices input - Symbols and special keys –Mouse actions: click, drag, grab - For + ing - which +verb.
Unit 7: Capture your favorite image-type of scanners - Word building: suffixes-comparatives and superlatives.
Unit 8: Viewing an output - The monitors and flat screens-Monitors: resolution, pixels, display, herz, VGA, LCD, CRT, phosphors.
Unit 9: Choosing a printer - types of printers: dot-matrix, ink-jet, thermal, laser printers, image setters, plotters.
Unit 10: I/O devices for the disabled - Braille, speech synthesizers, OCR, voice recognition, eye gaze system, sip&puff, touch screen, switch, screen-pointing device.
Unit 11: Magnetic drives - Floppy, hard disk, tape drive, removable cartridge, track, sector, format, magnetic, read/write heads, directory, access time, data transfer rate, fragmentation. Suffixes: -ic,
-ism, -ize, -izable, -er. Instructions with must/must not.
Unit 12: What’s a CD-ROM? - Acronyms and abbreviations: laser, ms, CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-R. Discourse cohesion: reference signals and connectors and modifiers.
Unit 13: Operating systems: MS-DOS, Windows, Mac OS,OS/2 Warp, UNIX, Linux. Operating system's utilities. Abbreviations: OS, MS-DOS, IBM. Countable and uncountable nouns.
Unit 14: The graphical user interface - Microsoft Windows - GUIs: windows, icons, pull-down menus, pointer, user-friendly, folder.
Unit 15: Word-processing facilities, writing tools: spell checker, thesaurus, grammar checker-Comparing word processor-WP programs: edit, format, search, replace, indent, WYSIWYG, clipboard, typeface.
Unit 16: Producing an invoice with a spreadsheet program - Spreadsheets: cell, column, row, formula, invoice, expenses.
Unit 17: Databases: field, record, file, sort, update - Plurals
Unit 18: Internet services and software: e-mail, web browser, newsgroup, IRC, online chatting,
Telnet, FTP, HTML, hypertext link, URI, intranet . Be, going to + infinitive.
Unit 19: Computer graphics: patterns, primitives, attributes, dithering, zoom, rotation, scaling, rendering- Gerunds (ing + noun).
Unit 20: Desktop publishing - DTP packages: layout application, image setter, service bureau, font software design, import - Affixation, conversion, compounding.
Unit 21: Web design: website, home page, HTML, tag, Web editor, hyperlink, hyper - Modal verbs.
Unit 22: Conditional clauses-Multimedia PC: sound card, MIDI, animation, video editing, File formats: .htm, .gif, .jpg, .mp3, .mpg.
Unit 23: Programming: flowchart, compiler, debug, bugs, machine code - Infinitive constructions.
Unit 24: C language - Visual BASIC, COBOL, LOGO, Pascal, C, SQL, Voice XML - The passive.
Unit 25: What is Java?-The Java applet, plug-in, interpreter, download - The past simple.
Unit 26: Jobs in computing- Jobs: programmer, DTP operator, computer operator

Unit 27: Data communication systems: fax, teletext, the Internet, BBS. Prefixes: tele-, auto-, inter-, trans-.
Unit 28: Internet issues-Internet security: User name, password, encryption, decryption, hacker, cookies, digital certificate, filter, computer crimes.
Unit 29: LANs and WANs - Networks: LAN, WAN, node, transceiver, protocol, token, gateway, ADSL, fiber optics - Prepositional phrases of ‘reference’.
Unit 30: New Technologies: WAP, UMTS, Internet TV, wireless, Bluetooth, palmtop, PDA -Will + infinitive - The future perfect - May/might/could + inf.
Obiettivi
Scopo del corso"English for IT" è quello di trasmettere ai partecipanti una conoscenza generale della lingua inglese applicata all'informatica.
